Headshots That Get You Called In

Your headshot isn’t meant to be your best photograph—it’s meant to be an honest representation of who casting will see when you walk into the audition room or appear on self-tape.

Casting directors repeatedly say the same thing: they expect the person in the headshot to be the person who shows up. If your photo no longer reflects your current look because you’ve changed your hairstyle or color, grown or lost facial hair, gained or lost a noticeable amount of weight, aged significantly, or otherwise changed your appearance, it’s time for new headshots. A great headshot captures your essence, your personality, and the roles you’re genuinely castable as today—not the roles you wish you looked like five years ago.

The strongest headshots are simple, authentic, and free from distractions. Wardrobe should support your type without becoming the focus. Expressions should feel natural rather than posed. Retouching should be minimal—remove temporary distractions if you like, but don’t erase the features that make you uniquely you. Those “imperfections” are often the very qualities that make someone memorable and right for a role.

The same philosophy applies to makeup. While actors are often told they need professional makeup for headshots, that advice frequently comes from the world of glamour photography rather than casting. The goal isn’t to perfect your face—it’s to present the face that casting will actually see.

For men, I generally encourage you to come as you are. Scars, wrinkles, freckles, and other defining features are part of your character and may be exactly what books the job. There’s no reason to hide what makes you distinctive.

For women, natural, everyday makeup is usually the best choice. Think of how you would normally present yourself when walking into an audition. If you feel more confident working with a professional makeup artist, you’re absolutely welcome to bring one to your session. I have no objection to photographing you with makeup—I simply don’t believe it’s a requirement for creating effective, bookable headshots.

The best headshot creates trust. It tells casting, “This is exactly who will walk through the door.” When your headshot is honest, current, and authentically you, it becomes one of the most powerful marketing tools you have.
